The History

Though the first official Dyna model was launched in 1991, its history dates several years earlier to the 1960s. This was when there was a revolution of sorts in the custom motorcycles industry, and Harley-Davidson started designing a hybrid model between the smaller Sportster® motorcycle and the bigger touring models.

In the 1970s, the Harley-Davidson FX Super Glide lineup was released with the frame and rear suspension from the FLH Electra Glide and the fork suspension from the XLH Sportster. This range received a lukewarm response, prompting the manufacturers to create variations throughout the 1970s and 1980s. These variations included the FXR Super Glide II, the FXRS Low Glide, and the FXRT Sport Glide. Around the late 1980s, Harley-Davidson began replacing the chassis in the FXR line.

In 1991, Dyna was released and promoted as the high-performing Big Twin model for Harley-Davidson. The model soon became one of the most successful releases of the company. It offered durability and smooth performance as two of its most notable features.

Though the lineup has is now discontinued, Dyna motorcycles are today available as a part of the Softail® motorcycle family.
