Having the correct riding gear can turn what would otherwise be a sweltering slog into a fun and enjoyable summer ride. Knowing what gear to choose is easier said than done. That is why Taboo Harley-Davidson® has created this guide to finding the most comfortable gear for summer riding.

The Importance of Summer Riding Gear

While we understand the temptation to wear shorts when you go out riding during the summer, you need long sleeves to protect your skin both from potential crashes and from the sun. That being said, the iconic leather jacket and jeans combo is ill-suited to summer riding. Look for a riding jacket and pants with cooling mesh material and vents. Avoid dark-colored clothing, which absorbs light and can make you hotter. Your outfit should protect you while still being breathable.

The Right Helmet

If you find your normal helmet too stuffy, look for one that offers better ventilation. Some bikers choose to wear a half-helmet during the summer, which provides inferior protection but is usually cooler.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses don’t just look good, they help prevent glare so that you can see what you are doing. Make sure that your pair is compatible with your helmet.

Gloves

Should you crash, your instinct will be to break your fall with your hands. That is why it is important that you pick sturdy gloves with good airflow. You don’t want to deal with a sweaty grip!

Boots

As funny as the image of a Harley® rider wearing flip-flops is, sturdy riding boots are always a must. As with everything else, make sure that what you are wearing is just as breathable as it is protective.

Socks

Socks made from a moisture-wicking material can make a huge difference when it comes to having a comfortable summer ride, so pay attention to what you wear on your feet.

Bandana and Neckerchief

A bandana is a great way to keep sweat out of your eyes. We also highly recommend wetting down a neckerchief before you hit the road. It will cool down your neck and can be wetted again whenever you stop along your ride.

Cooling Vests

Cooling vests act like a neckerchief for your whole body. You can wear it under your jacket, and resoak it as many times as you need to. We highly recommend it for those who want to do a lot of motorcycle riding during the summer.
